Before store doors open to the public, online fulfilment assistants work through aisles with multi-order trolleys picking customer baskets. As home delivery and click-and-collect orders expand, superstores require continuous pools of pickers who thrive on early starts, usually beginning around 4:00 am or 5:00 am. Because the role allows staff to finish their working day by late morning or midday, it attracts heavy application volume but also sees regular roster vacancies.
Key assessed competencies include Pick Rate Velocity, Quality Selection Standards, and Sensible Product Substitution. You will use a handheld terminal that directs your path through the store, displaying targeted items, barcodes, and countdown timers for every tote. Choosing bruised produce or meat with a same-day use-by date directly leads to customer complaints, meaning speed cannot come at the expense of careful inspection.
When an item is out of stock, I consider what the customer is cooking; if a specific branded pasta sauce is missing, I substitute the closest premium equivalent rather than an incompatible flavour profile.
The selection process usually features a timed situational judgement exercise where you determine which substitute best replaces a missing ingredient. Demonstrating that you treat each trolley as if shopping for your own family signals the exact conscientiousness team managers want to see.
